#A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CABBIE

I was never ever very close to my father. In fact although we lived under the same roof for 18 years he was more like a stranger than a father. He never gave me much advice except the one and only advice I can remember was the following:
" I do not care what you chose to do in life, carpenter, plumber, truckdriver or whatever you want to do except Don't ever be a fucking cabdriver only x-cons, and losers drive a cab."
I have been driving a taxicab for over 25 years. I am glad he did not tell me to not be a bank robber as I would probably still be doing time.
I have had CEO's of major companies tell me their secret fantsy was to drive a cab. People ask me alot of questions about driving a cab as if the taxicab profession is some kind of secret society. This article is to give the reader what a day in the life of a cabbie is like.

The first thing you have to remember about driving a cab is you are responsible for paying the taxicab company a daily lease which can vary from 110. to 140. per day plus gas that usually runs 20-30 dollars. In other words before you even pickup your first fare you owe 150.00 payable at the end of a 10 or 12 hour shift. A taxidriver must net about $30.00 per hour in order to realize a good night. Sometimes, you get lucky and book more sometimes less but in order to be successful this means sitting behind the wheel and having a quick snack on the road and finding a bathroom whereever you can in order to get through a shift. Over the past 25 years I have been rearended, t-boned, one roller over in a vehicle and one head on collision. I have been vomited on had my car covered in vomit front and backseat all at the same time been robbed once, have had passengers have sex in the back sea. Cab driving is ranked the #3 most dangerous job in American more dangerous than prison guard, or law enforcement.

I compare driving a cab to a Navy Jet Pilot taking off and landing on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean. You are responsible for the safety of yourself, your passenger, bicylists that run red lights, tourists that walk out into the street disregading "Don't Walks Signs" Motorcyles, Scooters, Skateboarders, People in Wheelchairs not to mention people on drugs that seem to just run across the street at any given moment when you are not expecting it.
After, 10-12 hours on the streets of San Francisco your nerves are frayed, your heart is pumping and you often have to sit for an hour just to unwind.
Considering what I have just told you about driving this does not include having a flat tire, a taxicab mechanical failure of an accident that closes streets and traffic jams that eat into your goal of 30.00 per hour.
I try to keep a postive attitude throughout the night even though many things are out of my control. I cannot let negative energy effect my relationship with my passengers or driving. I pray alot before I hit the streets and the following statement is what I live by. "THE DAY YOU GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAB AND NOT SCARED TO DEATH OF DYING OR INJURY IS THE DAY YOU WILL DIE OR BE INJURED."

HAUNTED TAXI DEATH IN TAXI 2013

I started driving taxicabs in San Francisco, California on New Years Eve of 1988. I was stationed in San Francisco with the U. S. Navy and needed some extra cash and driving a taxicab partime seemed to be the ticket. I will have to admit driving a taxicab in a big city compared to living in a small town of 20,000 people was a little bit scary but I was up to the challenge. I felt that driving a taxicab in San Francisco would at least be a source of stories to tell my grand children. I drove a taxicab in Key West, Florida for 9 months. Key West, was only 3 miles long and 3 miles wide and most of the passengers were tourists that were to drunk to find their hotel rooms and an occasional hooker taking a trick to a hotel room for a quick date.
When you are a new cabbie you get the shitest shifts, the worst taxicabs, and put up with the worst hours of any person working in the cab industry. The only good thing about it is that the turnover in the taxicab industry is pretty fast so within 6 months or a year you can be at the top of the tear and get a good shift, good car, and not put up with too bad of a life.
I was assigned taxicab 2013 on several occasions. Taxicab 2013 was mechanically a pretty good cab and I found is very strange I could always get it as no other drivers wanted to drive it. I began to feel strange feelings about 2013 on full moon nights and usually between the hours of 2:30 am and 4:30 am in the early mornings. The feeling was that there was a presence in the cab with me even though the taxicab was empty of passengers except for me. I would be driving down a street and would look up into the review mirror and think I there was going to be a face and there would be nothing.
The taxicab company had a drivers lounge in which we waited until we were assigned a taxicab to wait in. The taxidrivers lounge consisted of a picnic table, pool table, and a couple of video games to play while we waited for the previous shift driver returned the taxicab to the cab company.
The taxicab lounge was full of drivers one night. The day drivers were late returning their cabs and we all waited patiently for our nightly cab. I thought about it and suddenly asked the question out loud to about 50 drivers. "Has anyone in this room ever heard of A HAUNTED TAXICAB?" The room went silent for a few minutes and in unison 50 voices said TAXI2013!
The old taxidriver in the corner looked up from his newspaper and said "Have you ever heard the story of taxi2013.
"About two years ago a driver was headed down Chestnut Street at about 2:30 in the morning. "A fellow ran out of Danny's Bar and jumped into the taxicab and ordered the driver to take him to Oakland. The driver headed the taxicab through San Francisco and headed for the Oakland Bay Bridge. As the driver headed forward towards Oakland he realized there was an army of blue lights, red lights and local policecars behind the taxicab and slowed to a complete stop. As he stopped the taxicab he looked to see what his passenger was doing and out came a 38 caliber handgun . The passenger stuck the pistol into his mouth and squeezed the trigger and blood, human tissue, and body parts scattered throughout the cab.

The passenger had just robbed, raped and murdered a local bartender.

#HOOKING YOUR WAY THROUGH SCHOOL

It as a late Friday Night as I drove the taxi through the dark street of San Francisco. The young lady threw her hand up hailing my cab. She jumped into the front seat which I found a little odd as most women prefer to be in the backseat of a cab not the front seat with the driver. I asked "where too" She replied "32nd Lincoln" This was a good fare as it was out in the sunset and this late at night it would help me make my gate and gas. We headed toward Geary Blvd and she tossed her long blond hair side to side with the beat of the music playing on the radio.
" I am attending Law School at Hastings" she said.
" Great the city needs more young female attorneys" I replied.
" Guess how I am paying for Law School?" she asked.
" I have no clue " I replied".
" I am hooking my way through school, if I give you my card can you threw me some business?" she asked.
" No problem " I replied.
The meter was 15.00 as we pulled up in front of her apartment house and she handed me a 20. bill and said "thank you".
She then walked around the cab and tapped on my window.
"Can I help you?" I asked.
"Why are you still in the fucking cab driver how in the hell are you going to sell something you have never tried?" she asked.
