SAN FRANCISCO TATTOO SCENE

The new trend of getting a tatto by both professionals and entertainers has reached an all time high of 1 in 5 Amercan's have a tatto. The annual San Francisco Tattoo Expo only reenforces the poplarity of getting the body inked. U. S. Navy sailors once has their penis's tatto'ed as snakes or barber poles. Once an art only practiced by Sailors, Bikers and Outlaws has now made its way into upscale society. The orgin of the name tattoo goes back to the days of Captain Cook and is crew of sailors. The crew discovered an island where the natives used plant extracts for ink and wooden hammers and stakes to engrave designs into the warriors skin as a sign of courage. The sound of the wooden hammer made a tat tat tat sound. The sailors wanted to prove that they had in fact survived the long sea voyage. The true sign of a salty sailor all the way up to present is a tattoo somewhere on his body. Few young men to this day make it through the U. S. Navy without getting a tattoo. The tattoo expo proved that actually women feel as comfortable as men being inked. San Francisco's Lye Tuttle doubled for Burt Lancaster in a movie called "THE ILLUSTRATED MAN" Mr. Tuttle's tattoo parlor is still in business in the North Beach Area of San Francisco.
